Spiders get win against Fighting Saints, 7–2

The Spiders kept it saintly this week, staying out of the penalty box, except for one minor offsetting call early in the third.

The Spiders took to the grey Harding ice tonight in St. Paul following some familiar faces, with the C2 Royals taking on the C2 Jets in the prior matchup.

There was also another familiar face, at the other end of the rink, former Spider Eric Anderson tended the goal for the Fighting Saints, last season’s D2 champs.

The Spiders avoided spotting the opponent a goal or two to start the game, a positive change from previous weeks, instead getting a two-goal lead halfway through the first. However, plenty of low play in the Saints’ zone meant an equal number of Saints odd-man rushes back the other way. But Amber Obermoller was up to the task, eventually stopping all but two of the Saints’ 19 shots on goal. The Spiders put up a season-high 37 shots on net, finding twine on seven.

  • Lee Martini from right wing Ryan Herman
  • Center Mike Johnson, from Bruce Gustafson and … her first point of the season … goalkeeper Amber Obermoller, off a perfectly placed paddle swat to a breaking Bruce Gustafson.

In the penalty department, only Chris Flannery, who moments before the game swore his penalty in the first game was an aberration and he was not going to get another the entire season, got called for an offsetting high stick, resulting in 5-on-5 play continuing.

Final score: 7–2.

Next up for the first-place Spiders, a Dec. 7 matchup with the Wolf Pack, somewhere west of the Mississippi. The Wolf Pack, as Spiders’ faithful will recall, was the only team the Spiders beat last season, going 3–0.
