Cats shut out Spiders

It’s the first donut of the season (which is quite the SHOCKER given the Spiders’ record this season).

It was all Wildcats at the Peanut Gallery this afternoon, as the Cats played like Lucy pulling the the football away from Charlie Brown all game.

The only highlights, if they can be called highlights, were some impressive-for-the-AHA penalties committed by the Cats, including a full-out hip check along the offensive zone dasher, and the last call of the night, which led to a “lower-body” night-ending injury to Vandenberghe against the boards, and though it was called a 2 and 10 by ref. Hanson, the Wildcats captain actually appealed the call and suggested it should be a major. As usual, the refs are immune to feedback, even when it’s asking for a harsher penalty by the penalized team’s captain.

Mercifully, with 1:09 to go, the Cats notched the sixth marker, and the Spiders’ captain pleaded for runtime, so the team could high-tail it to the Nook and catch the Stadium Series game.

Final score: 6–0

It’s the first shutout of the season for the Spiders, as somehow they’ve managed to pot at least one a game despite stacking up the L’s. Not tonight. The best chance was on a post. Otherwise, the Cats’ goalie easily turned away the Spiders’ 19 shots.

The Spiders maintain their chokehold on the C3 cellar, tied with two other teams, at 1–12–0–0. And the Wildcats extend their long-running domination of the Spiders, with the Spider record at 2–8–0–0 dating back to the 2018–19 season.

The Spiders now head into the Super Bowl Bye and Winter Olympics pause, though it’s not clear if the NHL trade deadline also applies to C3.

The Spiders return to action in just over two weeks, a late Tuesday nighter at the Wooger against the 8th-place Troopers (7–4–1–0). The Spiders last faced the Troopers exactly a year ago, Feb. 16, 2025, a 3–2 loss. Though at that time, after three consecutive shutouts, the Spiders were still hovering just outside of the post-season cutoff line.

Lifetime against the Troopers, it’s 4–4–1 going back to the 2019–20 season.

Puck drop Tuesday at 9:30 p.m.
