Stranger things happened: Spiders in first place thanks to Bucs

The winless Buccaneers upset the first-place Fighting Piranhas on Sunday to create a three-way tie for C3 East first place.

The final scores from this weekend are in, and surprise: the last-place Buccaneers managed an upset of the first-place Fighting Piranhas, to pull the Spiders, Fighting Loons and Piranhas into a three-way tie for first place in C3 East.

However, once the post-season tiebreaker rules are applied, the shakeout lifts the Spiders into sole possession of first (head to head vs. Fighting Loons; number of wins vs. Fighting Piranhas. It’s a tenuous hold though, as there’s plenty of old-man hockey left to play in the regular season, and the fewest PIM tiebreaker threatens to derail any plans the Spiders have for the post-season, regardless of the Fighting Saints and Gold Rush knocking at the door.

The last time the Spiders held first place?

The first week of the 2012–13 season, when the Spiders won the opener. But the last lockup of first was the record-setting 2010–11 season at D1.
