End of an era … or two

The Spiders finally solved the Curse of the Chaos, ending the consecutive three-time champions’ domination of the Spiders over the last year. But, due to a policy change at the AHA, there’s not much we can say about it.

That’s because the league is no longer supplying game scoresheets to the teams. So, after a five-year run of up-to-the-minute, insomnia-inducing post-game stats, Spider fans will either have to buy a program at the game and keep score themselves, or settle for theory, conjecture and delayed stats.

The scorekeeper did inform the teams that the Spiders did actually win the game, though we can’t be certain until the league posts results within the next 72 hours or so.

So, unaudited, preliminary scoring has the Spiders winning in OT 4–3.

First goal was, supposedly, newly #38 center Mike Johnson, from Heitzman and maybe Pettengill.

Sometime after that, Jake Cison in his first AHA game with his first AHA goal, on assist from Yard.

And after the Spiders gave up some more goals, Chris Flannery swooped the coast to re-tie the game.

In the extra frame, after a few false starts and creative offsides calls, the Spiders supposedly capitalized during a line change, and possibly won the game, sometime in overtime, thanks to Cison’s knee pass to almost-gametime-scratch Chris Pettengill.

Other future details will show that the Spiders barely outshot the Chaos 33–32, which means rookie Spider goalkeeper Travis Fransen gets his first AHA win!

Penalties? Probably. Although the defensive duo of Flannery and LaCosse were conspicuously absent from the box. Grotbeck and Wahlberg got the sits, and there were also a few Black & Gold Chaos sweaters in there as well. Supposedly.

So, on the day the Spiders finally end the era of Chaos domination, there’s nothing the Spiders can show to recount the win. Ends of eras.

Next up, the Spiders will rest their weary legs with a Halloween bye week. Two weeks out, a hunting season weekend game, with the Fighting Saints.

Updated, Oct. 25

Final game stats are now available from the AHA, though list Flannery’s game-tying marker in the 2nd, not 3rd. Like the refs’ offsides calls during the game ... close enough.

For details, see the box score and game summary.
