Hockey starts tonight!

We’ve already had the first snowfall here in the Twin Cities, which means AHA hockey can’t be far behind. Your D1 Spiders take the ice tonight against the Chaos to start the AHA hockey season.

It’s an early start at new AHA arena Brooklyn Park. The puck drops at 7 p.m., where the 2008–09 D1 Champs the Spiders will face off against the 2008–09 D2 Champs the Chaos, who split their squad for D1 and D2.

It’s your first opportunity to see the retooled D1 Spiders, in their fifth full Winter season, and sixth season in the AHA. The Spiders, who lost a whopping six players to free agency and one-way contract buyouts to stay under the cap, welcome five new faces (and one “old”) to the red and white, as well as new alternate captain Chris Pettengill joining Captain Brad Caron and AC Jeremy Litton to man the clipboard.

Follow the D1 Spiders all season to see if they can continue their winning ways of last year, or return to the normal brand of Spider hockey with a first-to-worst turnabout.

Of note, the AHA will outdo the the NHL’s season start of 15 games in a day by featuring a whopping 25 games on Saturday, Oct. 24.
