Spiders vs. Gold Rush vs. Spiders vs...

The first playoff matchup of the winter season was a very familiar opponent.

About the only thing closer would be a game against the old Ice Sages. Or the former C2 Spiders.

Spiders. vs. Gold Rush vs. ...

The Spider bench hit its peak for the playoffs, at 10 skaters, a familiar look to the Spiders’ 2013–14 post-season appearance.

While the Spiders started the scoring early, Farner from O’Connor and Vandenberghe, Dave Sommerness didn’t wreak havoc in the Spider crease or prevent sub goalie Kristel Carlson from playing the puck during the scrum, tying the game (for the Gold Rush).

In the second, the newly reuinted Rhine Line reclaimed the lead for the Spiders, Ronneberg from Grotbeck and Schroeder. Continuing the theme of the night, Mike Mettee tied it again (for the Gold Rush) on a breakaway.

An obligatory penalty from Chris O’Connor in the third was all the Spiders would see of the scoresheet the rest of the game. With 6:57 remaining, Shawn Flake sniped from the right circle off a Rush rush. And that’s where the score would end, 3–2 Gold Rush.

The Gold Rush also edged the Spiders in shots, 28 for the Gold Rush and 22 by the Spiders on Gold Rush sub goalie Kyle O’Connor.

The Spiders last faced the Gold Rush in 2017, and with this game the record now stands at 5–6, dating back to the 2010–11 season, where the Spiders struck gold in the first matchup.

Next up in the playoff slate, the Spiders face off against the Fighting Walleye for the second time this season, despite a 1–1 record ... the first being the first-ever Spider forfeit in January. Lifetime against the Fighting Walleye, the Spiders are now 1–2*, with the first matchup in the playoffs last March, where the Walleye went on to win the C3 hardware.
