Whichever way you put it, the time off for the All-Star break wasn’t kind to the Spiders, who were handily outskated tonight by the Buzz, with a final score of 6–2.

A slew of penalties, a ton of defensive-zone turnovers, our top four scorers absent, not to mention the Buzz, who played a strong three periods of hockey, all contributed to the rout. An exhausted captain Carlos Eberhardt said, “I’m surprised it wasn’t worse.”

  • Mike Montgomery, for tripping
  • Ted Samsel, for interference

  • Brad Caron, for body checking

And duly noted: the Spiders, who faced four penalty-kill situations, including a four-on-three in the third period, ended up giving up a Power Play goal, the first short-handed goal by the Spiders’ PK unit since Dec. 14 and the fifth overall this season.

For the highlight reel: Goalkeeper Jeff Keacher’s performance in net. He faced 33 shots (8, 13, 12) from the swarming Buzz, making some amazing saves.
