Spiders fall to Moose 3–1, tied for last place in C3 East

The season is still young, but the C3 Spiders find themselves digging an 0–2 hole in the ice.

The Spiders headed all the way to Mendota to Saint Thomas Academy, a rink the Spiders hadn’t played since Jan. 26, 2014. The surprisingly lousy ice had skaters flip-flopping all over in the first period. The Spiders would eventually adjust, whereas the Moose used the opportunity to get away with a full-on contact defensive strategy.

The score was a stalemate though much of the game, when the Moose lit the lamp first on a 3-on-.5 breakaway.

That was followed by a rare-to-the-AHA double minor on the Moose late in the second period drawn by Jason Freed, which the Spiders effectively killed off.

But back at full strength, the Spiders tied up the game thanks to a seeing-eye wrister by Berman for his first of the season. And that completes the Spider scoring portion of the game recap.

A few minutes later, the Moose took advantage of a bad Spider change, and capped it with a great shot to go ahead 2–1.

Late in the game, the refs decided to call McCormick for getting his net crashed into by yet another flailing Moose skater. Soon after, with a minute and change to go, the Spiders pulled the goalie, but couldn’t beat Moose goalie (and C3 tier admin) John Bader.

Eventually, the Meese’s nightcap came with a 50’ empty-netter shot from the redline.

Next up, the Spiders face the undefeated Les Nords, as opposed to just their pucks. The Nords went 15–5 in the regular season last winter, and added to their franchise domination of the Spiders, who have a 1–5–1 record since 2015–16.

It’s another early Saturday game, 6 p.m. at SLP W.
