Shameful Spiders, Part II

The Spiders took their cue from the first meeting, and handed the game to the Shame.

Scoring early, but not often enough, did in the Spiders in the latest fall to the Shame On Ice, a team that has had the Spiders’ number.

Two first-period goals, by Johnson and Grobeck, had the Spiders up early. But a curious tripping call on Byland with one second to go in the first gave the Shame a power play to open the second, on which they capitalized in just 12 seconds. And it was all downhill from there. Another goal halfway through the second tied it up, and more whistles from the refs on the red-n-white gave the Shame much-lacking momentum, including a three-point basketball play at the end of the second.

In the third, even a WWF takedown still ended in the back of the net, giving the Shame a two-goal advantage. The Spiders answered back with an all-Mike Johnson steal at the blueline and snip at the blue paint to pull the Spiders to within one. A time out and goalie sit with just over a minute resulted in possession, but no serious chances, and confusion at the bench with a chance resulted in a Spider in the box to close out the game. Final score: 4–3.

The Spiders drop to 4–6–1 on the season.

And lifetime against the Shame: a dismal 1–4, stretching back to the 2013–14 season.

Next up, the 0–10–1 Scarlet Rebellion, Saturday back at New Hope.
