Spiders eventually warm up on the ice at Wakota, beat the Stars 5–1

It took some thawing, including a scoreless first period — a first for the 2008–09 Spiders — to come up to game temperature inside the sub-zero temps at Wakota. But warm up they did, eventually building up to a 5–1 victory over the perennially strong Stars squad.

Tonight was also (yet another) penalty-filled night, with the Spiders’ favorite AHA officiating crew on duty, and calling it like they see it ... which meant calling it often. The calling started out lobsided toward the Stars, who got the gate four times in a row in the first and second period. Then, toward the end of the second, it was the Spiders’ turn, who also saw the cushy sin bin four times in a row, including a 50-second 5-on-3 PK late in the third. And to note, although Ref Dale did get hit by the puck late in the third, fortunately it was off a Stars’ stick, not a Spiders’ stick. And, he said it hit him where he didn’t mind getting hit. Keep that in mind, Spiders: just aim better!

A scary moment at 12:01 of the third, when Stars veteran Tom Brownrigg went down hard following a play to the net. Dr. Rob was in attendance, and the Spiders wish Tom well.

Scoring for the Spiders:

  • First period:
    • Nada
  • Second period:
    • Chris Pettengill, from Rob Droullard and Nick Ungaro
    • Jay Hilden, unassisted, on the power play
    • Jay Hilden, on a face-off draw from Aaron Bedessem
    • Nick Ungaro, from Rob Droullard and Chris Pettengill
  • Third period:
    • On the PK, as the Stars netminder Jay Weiner came out to play the puck, Aaron Bedessem in a takeaway and shorthanded goal

A season-low for shots — 20 total, including only four in the first period (4, 10, 6). Both teams were about even, with the Stars putting 17 total (6, 5, 6) on Spider netminder and D1 East GAA-leading goalkeeper Amber Obermoller, who let in only one tonight, on the power play, courtesy of a screen by Brian Armagost. Amber forgot the secret code to get him out of the way.

The Spiders continue their unprecedented six-game winning streak, and still undefeated, at 6–0–2. The Stars sit at eighth place, at 2–5–1.

Next up for the Spiders, the final game of 2008, a pre-holiday early weeknight matchup with the Snowmen (0–7), next Tuesday at Augsburg.
