Spiders Top Warriors 5-2 In Battle of C2 North Heavyweights

A surprisingly temperate Ken Yackel West Side Arena was the site of Sunday’s showdown between the Spiders and the Warriors. On the line was first place in the C2 North division as the Warriors came in at 7-2-0 with the Spiders a half game back at 7-2-1. One of the Spiders’ losses was a 4-3 defeat at the hands of the Warriors on November 1st. During pre-game festivities, the Warriors provided a little bulletin board material as they were overheard discussing how our forwards weren’t very good, even though the Spiders came into the game with a C2 leading 56 goals scored.

Jay Hilden got the Spiders offensive juggernaut started with his fifth goal of the season less than three minutes into the game. Aaron Bedessem, fresh off a five-point night last Saturday, added a pretty goal just before the end of the period. Bedessem found himself alone in front of the net and patiently waited for Warrior standout goalie Mike Anlauf to commit before depositing the puck into the net.

The Warriors controlled play much of the second period and closed to 2-1 on a seeing-eye wrister into the top corner of the net. Spider netminder Brian Dow made some tremendous saves as the Warriors held a 12-6 shot advantage in the period.

Captain Dave Schliesman delivered an inspiring and motivational pep talk during the second intermission and the Spiders responded. Aaron Bedessem continued his hot streak as he tallied his second goal of the game just eight seconds into the third period. Not to be outdone, Jay Hilden then scored his second of the contest to put the Spiders up 4-1. The Warriors got to 4-2 on a scramble in front of the net. The Spiders played solid D in front of goaltender Brian Dow the rest of the way to ice the game. Dave Schliesman scored an insurance goal in the last minute to make the final 5-2.

Your Spiders now have three weeks off to enjoy first place before returning to the ice on February 6th against the Renegades.
