Spiders Tie Eagles 3-3

Spiders Captain Dave Schliesman was quoted between periods tonight as saying, “shoot guys…more shots…enough fancy stuff…just shoot the puck.” And that’s what the Spiders did, shooting the puck a record 39 times at the Eagles goalie, but only 3 times did the puck make it past the lucky net minder. The Spiders had numerous 2 on 1’s, 3 on 2’s, and even a few 3 on 0’s….but couldn’t convert. It was a frustrating night for the Spiders fore-checkers.

The Spiders equipment manager was equally as frustrated having to battle through two broken tuuks. Shawn Tromiczak broke his early in the first period, but luckily Brad Butalla carries a spare pair…a little small, but they worked for Shawn. Big Jim Green went down with a broken tuuk in the second period off a high-speed slapshot. Green was quoted later in the evening at a local sporting goods store saying, “Last time I bought skates, they only cost $37 bucks!…what’s the deal with these prices?”

The Spiders scoring tonight started in the first period by defensemen Josh Cagle in a scrum in front of the Eagles net, his quick stick proved too much for the Eagles. Sniper Bruce Gustafson scored the Spiders’ second goal assisted by Doug Thorson. And the finally tally came in the third as Tromiczak absolutely undressed the Eagles’ goaltender on a nifty breakaway move.

The Spiders record moves to 3-1-2 and they have secured a spot in the middle of the pack C2 Eastern standings. Up next for the Spiders are the Zephyrs (3-3-0) at Minnesota Made Hockey. Tonight’s attendance: 49.
