Spiders continue defensive dominance with 7-1 win over Eagles

It was Family Night at “The Rich” as a season-high crowd of 35 witnessed the Spiders dominate the short-benched Eagles.

The Spiders got on the board first at 11:39 of the 1st period with a goal by late-arrival Brad Butalla with Aaron Bedessem boxing out the defender after shuffling the puck to Butalla and Josh Cagle adding the phantom second assist. Greg Lindsley got his first goal of the season just 58 seconds later with a wrister over the downed goalie after a prolonged goal-mouth scrum. The only assist went to Shaun Tromiczak although most of the team had a whack at the puck during the scramble in front.

Spider captain Dave Schliesman tallied the only goal of the second period with assists to linemates Jim Maietta and Doug Thorson. The Spiders broke the game open early in the third with goals 17 seconds apart. Shaun Tromiczak went solo for the first and Doug Thorson banked the second off an Eagle defenseman. Crowd favorite Tim Stalpes had the first assist with Josh Cagle successfully lobbying for an additional helper.

The Eagles put an end to the shut out 5:47 into the 3rd period after a defensive breakdown by the aforementioned T. Stalpes/Cagle duo. Doug Thorson tallied his second goal of the night midway through the 3rd, facilitated by Jim Maietta. Jim Maietta rounded out the Spider scoring, netting a power play goal with the assist going to Dave Schliesman. The third period also featured Spider netminder Brian Dow putting on an impressive stretching display as the puck was kept in the Eagle end for extended periods of time.

For the game, the Spiders outshot the Eagles 48-12. Combined with last week’s disappointing yet hard-earned 3-3 tie against the Sled Dogs, the Spiders have put 102 pucks on net while allowing only 31 on Spiders goalie Brian Dow. Dow moves to 3-1-1 on the season and lowers his GAA to a division-leading 2.00.

The Spiders are off until Sunday, December 6th when they will take on the division cellar-dweller Admirals at Eden Prairie.
