Spiders drop to 0-2 with loss to Zephyrs

The Spiders dropped to 0-2 on the season, falling to the Zephyrs 4-2.

Eric Grotbeck gave the Spiders the early lead, scoring off a scramble in front of the Zephyr net. That makes two in two games for Grotbeck.

After the Zephyrs equalized, Paul Fitch gave the Spiders the lead again on a partial breakaway after a Zephyr turnover. From there it was almost all Zephyrs as they scored three unanswered to go up 4-2. The Spiders had a late 5-on-3 power play but couldn’t capitalize and the game ended 4-2.

Shot totals looked fairly even; 26 for the Spiders and 29 for the Zephyrs. But the quality of chances were very much in the Zephyrs favor as bad turnovers and inability to maintain possession doomed the Spiders. Brian Dow finished with 25 saves and kept the Spiders in the game with some big saves.

The Spiders sit at the bottom of the B3 West division. And in a statistical oddity they are the only team without a point as all other teams have a win or tie through two games.

It doesn’t get any easier as the next opponent is the Saints who are currently 2-0. The game will take place on Sunday, November 11th at 7:00 p.m. at Phalen in St. Paul. This will the first visit to historic Phalen Arena in the 12-year existence of the C2/C1/B3 Spiders.
