Spiders bounce back with 3-2 win over Mutiny

The Spiders are off to their best start since being promoted to the B3 level three years ago. After a flat effort in a loss against the Yellow Jackets, the Spiders showed that not only can they overcome setbacks and bounce back, but that they can win the close, hard fought games. Last season the Mutiny appeared on paper to be evenly matched with the red and black arachnids, but beat the Spiders in 2 of 3 matches. This year the Spiders came out with a renewed focus and tenacity, controlling the game well throughout all three periods.

Shawn Tromiczak continues to show a strong presence as an offensive minded defenseman. In the first period after skating though a handful of players he scored on a 18 foot laser sharp wrist shot to the upper left corner.

Aaron Bedessem followed this goal up with his second goal of the season off a deflection of Thomas Prausa’s shot from the point.

Overall, the Spiders played a well balanced game and dominated time of possession. They held the offensive zone and cycled the puck well. Center Jay Hilden found himself at home in “Gretzky’s Office,” controlling the puck behind the Mutiny’s goal waiting for seams to develop. This led to the eventual game winning goal by Ryan Wilson off a rebound in front of the net.

The only real threat came late in the third when the Spiders were assessed a four minute penalty. They successfully killed the penalty and stopped any momentum the Mutiny had built.

Other Notes:

The team continues to be plagued by in-the-crease calls, with a goal by Matt Adelman being waived off.

The game marked the first return of one of the 2014 departed Spiders as Jim Maietta served as a needed sub. Jim was back in Spiders form and contributed seamlessly to the team.

This game marked the third to last game of the season for goaltender Brian Dow. Dow bounced back from last week’s game and continued his potential Vezina qualifying season.

Up next, Thanksgiving weekend game at New Hope arena. Let’s hope the Spiders keep the energy up and the tryptophan has worn off by Sunday.
