Spiders struggle to 4-3 win over Mighty Northern

A win’s a win. So no reason to complain about the Spiders 4-3 win over the Mighty Northern Sunday night.

But the Spiders hoped to win by more. The Spiders hung 10 on last place Northern last time. The Mighty Northern had also given up at least 10 goals in six of their last seven games. The Spiders led 4-1 early in the 3rd but two late Northern goals had the Spiders scrambling late.

Jim Maietta, Matt Adelmann and Mike Townsend (twice) scored for the Spiders. More impressive was Geoff Kuppe’s first period assist while impersonating Hyannisport Presidents great Nick Brophy.

But a win’s a win. The win, coupled with the Wild loss to the Gators, moves the Spiders within ½ game of the 4th and final playoff spot.

The Spiders next take the ice against the 4th place Wild on Saturday, February 21st at Breck. The puck drops at 7:45pm. A win moves the Spiders into the playoff spots. The Spiders have split the previous meetings with the Gators. A four-goal 3rd period propelled the Spiders to a 7-5 win in early November but gave up three 3rd period goals in in a January 7-6 loss.
