Fast start propels Spiders to 10-5 win over Mighty Northern

The Spiders scored early and often Monday evening on the way to a 10-5 win over the Mighty Northern, with all 11 skaters notching a point.

Jay Hilden opened scoring just 18 seconds into the game with Jim Maietta doubling the lead minutes later. The remainder of the eventful period saw the Mighty Northern score twice but Hilden (again), Cory Vandenberghe, and Ryan Wilson responded to stake the Spiders to a 5-2 lead.

The Mighty Northern closed to 5-4 midway through the second period. Rather than panic the Spiders stomped on the gas again with Geoff Kuppe, Wilson, Maietta, Vandenberghe, and Bedessem scoring five straight goals. The Northen added one late to make the final score 10-5.

Jim Maietta takes 1st star honors with a 5 point night (2 G, 3 A). Ryan Wilson, Cory Vandenberghe, Geoff Kuppe, and Aaron Bedessem all finished with three points on the night.

Nearing the midpoint of the season, the Spiders sit in 3rd place in the B3 East with a 5-4-0 record. A critical stretch of games will kick off on Monday night against the 5th place Minnesota Loons. Then the Spiders will take on the division-leading Ice Hogs followed by the 4th place Taz Devils. This series of games will go a long way toward the Spiders creating some breathing room in the playoff hunt or looking to make up ground.
