Spiders Fall In Season Opener 4-1

The jokes were flying in the locker room before the game as the Spiders re-united for their first winter league game since losing in the C2 championship in April. The game also marked the first Spiders game for Matt Adelmann and first C2 game for D1 player Cody Yard.

The Spiders came out quick and dominated the first 10 minutes of the game before the Roadrunners forecheck got moving. The first period ended scoreless as Spiders netminder Brian Dow made a couple saves on breakaways from Roadrunner speedster Jeff Erickson.

The second period remained scoreless until defenseman Chris Stalpes roofed a slapshot past the goaltender from the top of the left circle with assists to Aaron Bedessem and Matt Adelmann. The second period ended with the Spiders had more chances including three power plays.

At the start of the third period, it was obvious the summer had taken a toll on the legs of the Spiders. The Roadrunners got the equalizer on a five hole dribbler past Dow. In the next two minutes they added two more goals as the worn-out Spiders failed to cover Roadrunners players streaking down the middle. With just under seven minutes left, Roadrunner breakaway specialist Jeff Erickson was finally awarded a goal. “Awarded” is the appropriate word as the referee is the only person who saw the puck in the net.

Final score – 4-1 Roadrunners.

Next up for the Spiders are the Fighting Piranhas on Sunday, November 7th at New Hope North at 7:30pm.
