Spiders get roughed up in AHA Fall Tournament

With a record of 0-2-1 in the pre-season AHA Fall Tournament, the Spiders have reasons for both optimism and concern leading into the unknown of the B3 division.

The Spiders opened against the B3-mainstay Lakers on Friday afternoon at BIG. While the final score of 4-0 might indicate a one-sided game, the Spiders held their own. The Spiders put 26 shots on goal and created several good scoring opportunities while noticeably picking up the pace of play as the game went on.

Saturday morning brought a rematch of the C1 championship game from April as the Spiders faced off against the Fighting Piranhas. It was a tight, defensive game just as it was last time and the score ended knotted at 1-1.

The tournament ended for the Spiders on Saturday evening against the Saints. Apparently the Spiders forgot to do their off season conditioning as the Saints seemed to be a step quicker, getting out to a 5-2 lead. Two late Spider goals closed the gap but the Spiders couldn’t score the equalizer.

The results weren’t as planned but the Spiders can take some positives out of the weekend. New Spiders Tom Prausa, Derk Jacobson, Bob Maietta, Mike Townsend, and Geoff Kuppe got some action while Shawn Tromiczak made his return to the squad.

The Spiders will now take a few weeks off with the season tentatively slated to start the weekend of November 1st.
