Spiders disappointing in loss to last place Rack Attack

After a regular season division championship and a trip to the playoffs last season, the Rack Attack have been disappointing with a 3-10-0-1 record entering Monday’s game. They finally looked like that playoff team as they took advantage of the Spiders lack of interest in defense, skating off with a 7-5 win.

The Spiders started slow, going down a goal early before getting a fortunate break as a second Rack Attack goal was waved off due to the net being off the moorings. A pair of goals by Jim Maietta and one from Matt Adelmann, along with another from the Rack Attack had the Spiders up 3-2 midway through the second period.

Four straight Rack Attack goals erased any momentum the Spiders had. A heat-seeking slapshot from Chris Stalpes and a bank shot off the post from Josh Cagle closed the gap to 6-5. The Rack Attack wasted no time putting an end to the Spider comeback, adding another goal just 16 seconds later. A late Spider power play failed to produce a goal and the game came to an end with the Rack Attack taking a well earned 7-5 win over the sluggish Spiders.

Despite giving up 7 goals, Spider netminder Brian Dow was sharp, making several spectacular saves. Dow made numerous big saves to give the Spiders a chance to win the game. In the end, too many defensive miscues and a general lack of effort resulted in too many Rack Attack chances.

It’s become a Spider tradition to lose a late season game against a team they should beat. Monday night was apparently (hopefully?) it.

A hopefully humbled Spiders squad will next take the ice on Saturday, March 2nd at 4:15pm at Breck Arena against the Puck Hounds.
