Spiders take night off against Rack Attack

The Spiders took the night off against the 2nd place Rack Attack, losing a one-sided match 6-1 at the Coliseum in St. Paul. The Spiders started out flat, getting outshot 17-3 in the first period, and yielding a first-period hat trick to the Rack Attack’s league-leading (actually 2nd place) scorer M. Hostetler. The lone highlight in the first period was Spiders goaltender Brian Dow. Dow kept the Spiders in the game, which could have easily been 6-0 after the first period.

The fast-paced game continued into the second period. Captain Dave Schliesman tried to shake up the lines to generate more offense. Spiders Defensemen Shawn Tromiczak was pulled up to Center to see if he could provide the spark. The Spiders did get more time in the offensive zone in the second, getting 11 shots on goal versus the Rack Attack’s 16; however, the Spiders just couldn’t buy a goal or even a lucky bounce.

In the 3rd period, the Spiders got on the board with John Trentor’s goal off a centering pass from Bruce Gustafson. Trentor set up a tent in the slot and waited for the puck to find his stick, he buried the shot, but it was too little too late for the Spiders.

The Spiders new Media Relations Intern, Sydney Butalla, was on the ice after the game getting player interviews, and also snapping a handsome team photo for the media guide. Sydney requested that fans look for the photo update on the website later today after she finishes airbrushing some hair onto a few of the players.

The Spiders continue to be one game out of the playoffs, holding onto their 5th-place spot, just two points (1 win) out of 4th place. Spiders management continues in a “wait and see” mode regarding any trades before the deadline. The Front Office was quoted as saying: “Our Spiders franchise has never been in the AHA playoffs, we very much want to deliver that to our fans and community, but we don’t want to mortgage the team for a key player and put our future in jeopardy. We just aren’t sure yet if we are going to make a move.”

Next up for the Spiders, the Eagles at Wakota on Saturday, March 1, at 8:50 p.m.

Tonight’s attendance: 13
