Greyhounds all bark, little bite in summer hockey

Like a puppy too young to be housetrained, the aptly named Greyhounds from the AHA’s summer league tradition of naming teams with a specific theme (dog breeds) were on the training pad consistently this summer.

For a fifth consecutive summer, the Spiders and Wingmen teamed up for the AHA summer league, competing at L5 (C3-equivalent), adding friends from the Gold Rush, Northern Horde, Wolfpack as well as some AHA rookies fresh off the draft.

After an iffy start in June, going 2–3 to start out the season, the Greyhounds made up ground, and capped the regular season with an impressive 3–0 streak, finishing the regular season at 6–5–1, in 4th place out of 9.

In the single-elimination playoff format, the Greyhounds faced a back-to-back with the Dachshunds (Mastodons), and despite a tiebreaker advantage, the Greyhounds snatched defeat from a certain tie, with Zollman and Fleischhacker clinching the game with 30 seconds to go on the OT clock.

Those Dachshunds went on to knock off the first-seeded Beagles (Royals) to face the Bassets (Les Etoiles Du Nord) in the Level 5 final, where the Bassets dominated 6–4 and took home the L5 trophy.

If it’s any consolation, it was the Greyhounds late-season shutout of the Bassets (Les Etoiles Du Nord) that knocked them out of first place.

In the stat leaderboards, the Greyhounds managed to make appearances mostly in the PIM category, though the newly formed Sommerness/Povis/Krough line made a formidable dent in the offense categories:

  • Points leaders

    • Brent Povis (22; 3th place)
    • Dave Sommerness (20; 7th place)
    • Todd Krough (19; tied for 8th place)
  • Goals leaders

    • Dave Sommerness (13; 6th place)
    • Brent Povis (10; 9th place)
  • Assists leaders

    • Brent Povis (12; 4th place)
    • Todd Krough (11; tied for 5th place)
  • PIM leaders

    • George Farner (24; 2nd place)
    • Brad Sutton (18; 5th place)
    • Tim Bullock (16; 6th place)
    • Jon Pappone (14; tied for 8th place)
  • Goaltending

And goaltender Suzanne Kellogg finished tied for fourth in average goals allowed, at 3.3, and in second in save percentage of 90.91.

In all, a fun summer, and a great way to beat the heat, even if the humidity occasionally led to clouds forming inside the rink.
