Shameful Spiders

Spiders lose 6–3 to short-benched Shame On Ice

The Spiders attempt to get the first win of the 2016–17 season didn’t turn out as planned. Despite a short bench for the 1–0 Shame, the Spiders were the team that looked outmanned (and out-womaned).

With plenty of chances, including power plays at key moments of the game, the Spiders simply could not solve the Shame goaltending when it mattered.

The game was tied at two apiece halfway through, with goals from Grotbeck (from Schuster and Langseth) and Bredael (from Farner). But rather than the 11 skaters on the Shame tiring out, they took advantage, with three unanswered goals into the third to go up 5–2.

The Spiders got one back with six minutes to go in the third, from Bullock from Droullard and Derek Elling. A convenient whistle with just over two minutes allowed the Spiders to call timeout and add an extra skater. The Shame added to the Spiders’ advantage with a body check at 1:47 to go. The 6-on-4 opportunity had its moments, but a blueline turnover ended up in the Spiders net to seal the deal.

Final score: 6–3.

The Spiders did win on the shot clock, outshooting the Shame 28 to 21. Curious minds may want to know that the last time the Spiders outshot a team was Feb. 20, 2016, vs. the Northern Horde, 33 to 30. (Otherwise, last season, the Spiders were outshot in 15 of 20 games in the 2015–16 season, with a 126 shot differential over the 20-game season.)

Standings watch

It’s only November, but the Spiders find themselves in familiar territory: the C3 cellar. Next up, it’s a new to the AHA Winter League team, the Scarlet Rebellion. This team made the jump from the now-defunct AHA Women’s League, which was down to three teams coming into the season and therefore, combined with the Winter League. Last season, the Scarlet Rebellion finished in first, 16–2–2, and lost 2–1 in the championship. So far this season, they’re 0–1–1, with an 8–6 loss to the Black Ice, last week, and a tie with the Silverbacks this week.

Puck drop is 7:20 p.m. at Aldrich, Saturday night.
