Spiders finish 2014 with first shutout loss of season

Spiders lose 3–0 to second-place Mastodons in pre-New Year game.

After a scoreless first, the Mastodons got on the board thanks to a power play goal with 5:58 remaining. Two minutes later, it was 2–0 Mastodons.

With just over six minutes to go in the third, the Mastodons made it 3–0.

The last time the Spiders were down by three was the end of November, against the Royals. The Royals’ goaltender Ben Cavender, incidentally subbing for the Mastodons tonight, was seen having fits of flashback in his crease, as the Spiders had put up a 17-second rally that night to close the difference to one. Instead, tonight Cavender was ready, and kept the puck out of his net, shutting out the Spiders, the team’s first donut of the season.
