Spiders again featured in USA Hockey Magazine

USA Hockey Magazine celebrates the fifth anniversary of the Spider brand of adult hockey

As reported earlier by the C2 squad’s media team, page 4 of the March 2010 edition of USA Hockey Magazine has a picture of Spiders’ founder Marc Berris shaking hands with a Sled Dogs player in the two teams’ March 17, 2005, game in Beginner School.

The picture was taken for an April 2005 USA Hockey article about adult hockey. The original article can be found in the news archive.

With the D1 squad’s playoffs hopes beyond dimming, AHA league message boards and Twitter feeds have run amok speculating about the hidden meaning behind the use of this photo, coming precisely as the D1 Spiders’ playoffs hopes have beyond dimmed. Moreover, the C2 squad faced — and was defeated by — the very same Sled Dogs squad last night, in a vie for the C2 North crown.

Could there be a conspiracy underfoot — intended to send a shot across the bow to the Spiders? Is USA Hockey calling out the Spiders for violating the standards of play? Is Marc Berris planning to reclaim his #18 sweater from Trentor’s closet in a bid to assist the C2 squad finally slay the Sled Dogs?

Berris, who was traded following the 2007–08 season to the Maroons for draft picks still to be named later, retired from AHA hockey following the 2008–09 season. Reached for comment, Berris said, “While the Sled Dogs may have stomped all over us at every opportunity in Beginner School, considering it’s our faces in the magazine, looks like we got the last laugh. Frankly, I’m surprised they didn’t use the other photo ... where Mad Dog Rajes is getting his fighting major.”

Marc Berris, right, thanks the Sled Dogs’ Lindquist for holding back after 12 goals.
