Spiders top Snowmen 3-2 in last game of 2008

Media Relations alert: The Spiders Chief Editor has taken a one-game leave, so the Intern gets his crack at the recap.

The Spiders were a little bit of an over-confident team with some pre-game happy hour (by some) and talk about plans during the game. The first clue of how the game was going to go was when one of the Snowmen asked if it was OK that a few of the players had different jerseys (Ringers?).

The Spiders came out a bit sluggish and the Snowmen put the pressure on right away. Johnson was able to put the Spiders on the board first with an assist from Droullard and Ackermann (on the bench). The Snowmen kept the pressure on with a few scoring chances including a tying goal late in the first period.

The second period did not start as good as the first period with the Snowmen getting the go-ahead goal at 13:06. The Spiders kept the game interesting with Pettengill being tagged with two tripping penalties during the second period. The Spiders PK unit kept with it and were able to keep the Snowmen scoreless. One of the top highlights of the game was the game-tying and first career goal from Paul LaCosse, with an outstanding headfake that KG would have been jealous of. The assists came from Vandenberghe and Bedessem.

The third period was close with a tied game, but the Spiders dominated most of the period, despite two more penalties. Another one of ESPN’s Top Ten™ plays was the game-winning — and first career AHA — goal by Mike Olson on a two-on-one pass from Bedessem. The patience and Olson had made the perfectly placed shot memorable.

The Snowmen put up a good fight and the question will be if they were all their “normal” skaters.

The Spiders had 25 shots on net and the Snowmen had 17 with 15 saves from the D1 East-leading goalie Obermoller.

The Spiders continue to hold onto first place in D1 East, at 7–0–2. The Snowmen are 0–9. Next up for the Spiders, it’s the second meeting of the season against the 5–1–3 Lumberjacks. The first meeting ended in a 2–2 draw.

Complaints and suggestions can be e-mailed to the Chief upon his return.
