Spiders take showdown with Taz Devils 3-2

The Spiders continued their hot streak with a 3-2 win over the 2nd place Taz Devils.

Joe Long gave the Spiders the lead just 20 seconds into the game as he followed his shit and put home the rebound. The Devils answered immediately as the Spiders couldn’t clear the zone and a loose puck fortuitously to an unmarked man between the circles. The Taz Devils took the lead midway through the first as Steve “Bobcat” Conley collected a loose puck and buried at Brian Dow looked on helplessly.

Christian Peterson showed no signs of a letdown from his hat trick last week. Peterson knotted the score with a roofed backhander from close quarters in the middle of the second. As the third period commenced the Spiders defintiely had the upper hand. As the clock ran down the Taz Devils were frantically trying to hang on to the tie. Again Christian Peterson came to the rescue as he rifled the game winner past the Devils netminder. The goal brings Peterson’s tally to seven over the past three games.

The win improves the Spiders to 6-1-1 on the season and the Spiders retain 1st place in the B3 East. Next up for the Spiders is a match up with the 2nd place Spitfires Green (6-2-0-0). This is a new Spitfires squad and, after an uneven start, they enter the game with a 5-game win streak. A quick look at the Spitfires statistics show a team that scores lots of goals – nearly 6 per game. While they don’t give up many shots, they’re stopping just under 85% of shots against. This is a stark contrast to Brian Dow’s save percentage of 90.9%.

The showdown takes place at Woog arena in South St. Paul at 9:20pm on Thursday, January 11th.
