Leftovers double-up Spiders 6-3

Flying high after a dominating victory over the Mutiny last week, the Spiders came crashing back to Earth on Sunday courtesy of the Leftovers.

The Spiders controlled play early with Jay Hilden knocking in a rebound to put the Spiders up 1-0. Despite several scrambles for loose pucks in the crease the Spiders couldn’t extend the lead. The Leftovers knotted the game at 1-1 late in the period. When the whistle sounded to signal the first intermission the Spiders held a 15-6 advantage in shots on goal.

The Leftovers came roaring backs to life in the second, scoring two quick goals to take a 3-1 lead. From there all the pucks bounced the Leftovers way as they scored two more early in the third to jump out to a 5-1 lead. Mike Townsend and Chris Stalpes had goals sandwiched around another Leftover goal to bring the game to a close with a 6-3 final.

A quick peek at the box score reveals one telling stat – the Leftovers had 10 assists on their 6 goals. A combination of puck possession and smart positioning allowed the Leftovers to take advantage of Spider mistakes, resulting in plenty of quality shots from dangerous positions.

The Spiders will take the Thanksgiving weekend off before making the trip to Breck Arena on December 8th with a 7:45pm start time. The Spiders will face off against the Lakers, who beat the Spiders 4-0 in the Fall Tournament although the game was more competitive than the score would indicate.
